Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers about how Worldoku works — and how it handles geography’s trickier edge cases.
What is Worldoku?
Worldoku is a free daily geography puzzle. You fill a 3×3 grid with countries that satisfy both their row and column category — part trivia, part logical deduction. See how to play.
Is Worldoku free?
Yes. Worldoku is free to play on the web and Android. A free account lets you save your streak and compete on leaderboards.
How often are new puzzles released?
A brand-new daily puzzle is published every day, across four difficulty levels. You can also play unlimited random games any time.
Where does the country data come from?
From public, authoritative sources including the United Nations, the World Bank, the CIA World Factbook, UNESCO, Pew Research Center, Ethnologue and Encyclopædia Britannica, among others. See About for more.
Why does Turkey (or Russia) count as both Europe and Asia?
They’re transcontinental. Most of Turkey’s land is in Asia, but East Thrace — including part of Istanbul — is in Europe, so it counts for both. Russia, Kazakhstan and Egypt are handled the same way.
Is the United Kingdom an island nation if it has a land border?
Yes. “Island nation” means a country located on an island; having a land border doesn’t disqualify it. The UK and Ireland both count — and each is the other’s only land border.
Then why isn’t Brunei an island nation?
Brunei sits on the island of Borneo but shares a land border with Malaysia, so under Worldoku’s rule it is not classified as an island nation.
Does Spain count as a G20 member?
Yes — Spain attends every G20 summit, but as a permanent guest rather than one of the formal members. Worldoku accepts it for “G20 Member”.
What country names and spellings are accepted?
Common aliases and historical names resolve automatically: the four UK nations, “Britain” and “Great Britain” → United Kingdom; Burma → Myanmar; Czechia → Czech Republic; East Timor → Timor-Leste; Swaziland → Eswatini; Persia → Iran; Siam → Thailand. Many territories also resolve to their parent country.
Some answers seem debatable — how are those decided?
Geography is full of edge cases. Worldoku documents the trickiest judgment calls — transcontinental countries, hemispheres, seas counted as oceans, religion at the margins and more — so you can always see where it lands and why.
Can I play on my phone?
Yes. Worldoku has an Android app, with an iOS app coming soon, and the web version works in any modern mobile browser.
